GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR THE WEB

Art 381. Graphic Design for the Web
Two hours lecture; three hours lab (3).

Prerequisite: ART 280, 281 or permission of the instructor.

Visual problem solving for graphic designers relating to illustration, typography, page layout and site design for the web (2-D).

  1. Detailed Description of the Content of the Course

The course reinforces problem-solving skills and basic design principles in their application to the unique environment of the web. Students design an overall web site and prepare images and type for individual pages while adding basic navigation functions. Efficient planning and maintenance of the web site is emphasized, but other methods for electronic display and distribution are explored.

  1. Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course

Lecture demonstrations and written materials familiarize the student with basic concepts of web design. The software used at various stages in the design process, as well as peripherals such as scanners and video/digital cameras is demonstrated. Videos, self-paced tutorials, and quick-reference texts are available to students during class and lab hours.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Student outcomes: By successful design and construction of all parts of a functional web site, students will demonstrate knowledge of design principles and visual problem solving. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge of various software programs and their application to generating and preparing images, type, and page layouts in the unique environment of the web. Students will perfect design problem-solving skills and apply them to assignments.

Assignments and participation in class critiques are graded on the basis of process, punctuality, relevance to the problem, creativity, etc. Attendance and contribution in class/labs are included in the grade for each assignment.
