HLTH 111. Personal Health
Three hours lecture (3).
The course is designed to assist students with life adjustment problems, supply scientific information, stimulate effective health choices and encourage positive health behaviors.
Students need a solid foundation of health related information in order to be able to make wise health decisions related to areas such as drugs (legal and illegal), nutrition, weight control, stress management, fitness, and other personal health issues.
- Detailed Description and Course Syllabus
The emphasis of personal health is personal responsibility. This course looks at the individual as a unique personality, as well as a member of a culture. Health knowledge and awareness, decision making and critical thinking processes are developed through exercises.
1. Course Syllabus
a. Active discussion of assigned library readings
b. Completion of oral and written assignments
c. Involvement in identified support group
Topic Outline
Seven Life Extending Health Behaviors
(1) Three meals/day with no snacks
(2) Breakfast every day
(3) Moderate exercise three times/week
(4) Sleep 7-8 hours/night
(5) No smoking
(6) Maintain moderate weight
(7) No alcohol or only in moderation
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
A teaching approach using writing and oral communication will be emphasized.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. Students fulfill the general education requirement in the community health major and the university.
2. Students select a basis for evaluating personal lifestyles.
- Assessment Measures
Graded assignments will be five letters, in-class writings, individual oral presentations on reading assignments and group oral presentations.
