ESHE 396. Assessment and Prescription in Exercise, Sport and Health Education
Two hour lecture; two hours laboratory (3).
Prerequisites: HLTH 200, and ESHE 392 or 391.
Designed to examine the techniques of assessing physical fitness, and provide practice assessing physical fitness components. This information will be interpreted and developed into an exercise prescription. Advanced techniques of assessment will be used in this class.
- Detailed Description of Content of Course
Designed to examine the techniques of assessing Physical fitness, and provide practice assessing physical fitness components. This will include interpretation of results, and developing individual prescriptions based on the results. Sport and wellness leadership concentration majors need to be capable of assessing the fitness of clients In the area of physical fitness and developing prescriptions based on the clients fitness scores. The students will develop and practice assessing skills in:
1. Cardiovascular endurance.
2. Muscular strength and muscular endurance.
3. Flexibility.
4. Blood pressure.
5. Body composition.
6. Estimates of VO2 Max.
7. Direct measure of VO@ Max.
8. Reading and interpretation of ECG’s.
9. The effects of medicines during exercise testing and in prescription. The students will develop individual prescriptions based on the physical fitness data collected. Guidelines for testing and working with adults and special populations will be developed.
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
A combination lecture and laboratory experiences will be presented to cover the topic of assessment of physical fitness. The emphasis will be on assessment practice and the interpretation of data from assessment. Assessment of cardiovascular fitness using bike tests, walking/running tests and treadmill tests will be covered with techniques for monitoring heart rate and blood pressures during exercise. Assessment of muscular strength and endurance using dynamometers, weights and without equipment will be covered. Assessment of flexibility using goniometer and flexometer, and sit and reach tests will be used. This course will develop an understanding of the role of physical fitness assessment in fitness programming.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Utilize bicycle, treadmill, and walk/run tests of cardiovascular endurance while monitoring blood pressure and heart rate where appropriate.
2. Utilize dynamometers, weights and body weight in tests of muscular Strength and endurance.
3. Utilize skin caliper, underwater weighing, and bioelectrical impedance equipment to estimate body composition.
4. Utilize goniometer, flexometer, and sit and reach tests to evaluate flexibility.
5. Understand the use of gas analysis equipment to measure VO2 Max during exercise.
6. Use the information collected in items 1 to 5 to develop individual prescriptions. These will be presented in written and oral reports to simulated clients.
7. Explain the guidelines for testing to clients and staff.
- Assessment Measures
Assessment will involve criteria referenced tests of basic physical fitness test procedures, graded written work which will be developed into a testing resource manual, oral and written reports, bi-weekly quizzes and a final examination, and evaluation of exercise prescriptions.
