GENERAL MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND CONCERNS OF THE ATHLETE

ESHE 340.  General Medical Conditions and Concerns of the Athlete (Athletic Training)
Credit Hours (3).

Prerequisites: EHSE 250, ESHE 323 or Consent of the Instructor. (3)

Introduction to illnesses and disease processes common in athletic populations.  Emphasis will be placed on prevention, recognition, immediate care and appropriate referral techniques.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course is designed to provide students with experience in both the didactic and psychomotor aspects of illness evaluation. Special emphasis is given to the decision making processes involved with illness assessment. For each condition studies in this class students will review the anatomical structures associated with the condition, signs and symptoms of common illness and disease processes, and common medical procedures used to identify them.  In addition, students will learn how to use an otoscope and opthalmascope.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will be taught in a variety of situations including lecture, problem solving sessions and hands on experiences.  Students work in groups to learn skills and assess the skills of other class members.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Use appropriate medical terminology to relate signs and symptoms of illness to other health care providers.
2. Develop accurate concepts regarding the role and responsibilities of various medical specialties (dermatology, urology, gastroenterology, etc.).
3. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for dental injuries.
4. Palpate the four abdominal quadrants for injury.
5. Use a stethoscope to identify pathological breath sound, hear sounds, and bowel sounds.
6. Use an otoscope and opthalmascope to identify common eye and ear maladies.
7. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for respiratory ailments (e.g., asthma, bronchitis etc.).
8. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for general medical ailments (e.g. appendicitis, chicken pox, etc.).
9. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for ailments associated with the immune system (e.g., AIDS).
10. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for skin conditions (e.g., eczema).
11. Identify signs, symptoms and appropriate treatment and referral strategies for conditions associated with menstruation (e.g. oligomenorrhea).

2. Oral/practical examination.
3. Written paper on a specific illness.
4. Oral presentation.
