INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION

ESHE 210.  Introduction to Teaching Physical and Health Education 
One hour lecture; two hours laboratory (2).

Prerequisite: 15 semester hours completed.

The point-of-entry course in the physical education teaching concentration.  Provides an overview of the teacher licensure process for health and physical education in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Students are expected to understand and demonstrate their knowledge of the history, philosophy, sociology, and current models of teaching physical and health education.  Also includes a PRAXIS I exam requirement for all students.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Emphasis on student knowledge of the history, philosophy, and sociology of teaching physical and health education. This knowledge will help guide students to make an appropriate decision as they consider a teaching career. On-site visits to local elementary, middle, and high school physical and health education classrooms and gymnasia to observe and interact with K-12 teachers and reflect upon the instructional methods and assessment strategies employed by the teachers. Special consideration will be given to understanding, preparing for, and passing the Praxis exam required for teachers in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students will be expected to form their own opinion about the future of teaching physical and health education and what implications might directly impact their career choice.

Course information will be presented through a wide variety of teaching methods including, but not limited to, large and small group discussions, role playing and student presentations, individual and small group projects, and on-site field trips to elementary, middle, and high school physical and health education classrooms.

1. Discuss the benefits and challenges of teaching physical and health education.
2. Identify various communication outlets available within the profession including newsletters, journals, and electronic media.
3. Summarize historical foundations and their impact on the future of teaching.
4. Locate current state and national guidelines for teaching physical and health education.
5. Express a personal teaching philosophy that is compatible with the Department of Exercise, Sport and Health Education at Radford University.
6. Identify current trends in education and their implications for future physical and health education teachers.
7. Summarize philosophical viewpoints and their impact on future programs.

1. Weekly assessments of readings, class discussions, and in-class presentations.
2. Small Group projects and presentations.
3. Written examinations.
4. On-site teaching observations.
