DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Math 437. Differential Equations

Prerequisite:  MATH 252 or MATH 255.

A study of analytical techniques, numerical methods, and computer software for differential equations.  Students who have earned credit for Math 346 cannot subsequently earn Credit for Math 437.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Basic existence and uniqueness of solutions, first order equations, second order equations, linear systems, higher order equations, related computer software, and selected additional topics.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The particular software used will vary among instructors; for example, packages such as DRAKE, MAPLE, MATLAB, NETLIB, ODE ARCHITECT PLOD, SLATEC, and similar packages may be used.  Additional topics may include ones from two point boundary value problems, analytical tricks for classical problems, infinite series solutions, partial differential equations. Fourier analysis, and the numerical method of lines

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Acquire a working knowledge of basic results, numerical methods, and computer software for differential equations.

  1. Assessment Measures

The assessment measure will vary among instructors and may include in-class examinations, homework assignments, computer projects, and performance in class and in laboratory activities.

  1. Other Course Information

This course is an enhanced version of the traditional undergraduate differential equations course (Math 436) and include modern computer technology as an integral component, thus allowing advances in computer technology to be continuously integrated in a coherent and timely fashion.
