PRECALCULUS FUNCTION ANALYSIS

MATH 138. Precalculus Function Analysis
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisite: Advise a minimum of two years of high school algebra (or equivalent).
Basic concepts of functions and related real number algebra and graphing, especially polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions. Will not satisfy requirements for a major in mathematics. General Education Credit - Mathematical Sciences.
- Detailed Description of Content of the Course
The following topics in mathematics will be covered:
1. Short review of basic algebra of real numbers
2. Functions, domains and ranges
3. Linear, Quadratic, Rational and Exponential function
4. Inverse of a function
5. Logarithmic functions
- Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course follows a traditional lecture format. In all sections students will be asked to work problems assigned as homework. Class discussions center around these problems. Work with scientific or graphing calculators will be included. Mathematical software may be required.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
Students are expected to develop skills and a knowledge base which will prepare them for study in calculus.
- Assessment Measures
Grades are based on performance on in-class tests, possible homework assignments and competence as displayed on a final comprehensive exam.
- Other Course Information
May be taken to fullfill general education requirements in mathematics.
The course is intended for majors in math or stat or any of the sciences.
