CHEM 474. Biochemistry Laboratory
Three hours Laboratory (1).
Prerequisite or Corequisite: CHEM 471 or BIOL 471
Provides experience in isolating and determining properties of biochemicals and in using biochemical analysis techniques.
- Detailed Description of the Content of the Course
The course is designed to provide students with experience in the use of biochemical laboratory techniques. The laboratory exercises include the following:
1. Isolation of Casein and Lactose from Milk
2. Mutarotation of lactose
3. Peptide Characterization: peptide hydrolysis, chromatography of amino acids, end group analysis
4. Analysis of serum proteins by electrophoresis
5. Nucleic acid isolation, purification, and characterization
6. Spectrophotometric measurement of enzyme kinetics
7. Analysis of the fatty acid composition of fats and oils
- Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course
The students are expected to work three hours per week in the laboratory. Most of the exercises require more than one laboratory period.
- Goals and Objectives of the Course
To provide interested students with the opportunity to observe the properties of biochemicals and learn some of the techniques used in biochemical analysis and research.
- Assessment Measures
The students are graded on the quality of their laboratory work and the laboratory reports they prepare.
