  1. Catalog Entry

GEOG 314. Digital Cartography (T)
Three hours lecture and laboratory (3).

Prerequisites: GEOG 125 and GEOG 214.

Theory and practical experience in computer mapping and graphics. Digital Cartography is a requirement for the Technical and Planning concentrations.

  1. Detailed Description of Course

The following topics and applications are included in the course, Mid-level Theoretical Concepts:

(1) transformations: vector to raster, map scale, projection data types
(2) data structures, map and non-map
(3) computer-assisted drawing

And software applications:

(4) ArcView
(5) Excel
(6) AutoCad
(7) Map Viewer and Vertical Mapper
(8) Photoshop
(9) Corel Draw

  1. Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course

The course consists of lectures, and laboratory demonstrations and exercises which illustrate the range of techniques and applications of visualization and cartography.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

The course provides students with an opportunity to understand theoretical and practical application in the field of digital cartography. Students will:

(1) develop an in depth comprehension of the practices involved in visualization techniques used in computer graphics and mapping, including location and integration of data and, (2) become proficient in the more complex applications of the techniques used in computer graphics and mapping, including animated maps, clickable maps, and web-based maps.

  1. Assessment Measures

A series of laboratory exercises constitute the workload in this class, each encompassing techniques learned in the previous exercise. The laboratory exercises assess the student's ability to apply specific computer graphics and mapping techniques. The final applied project will assess the student's ability to utilize a variety of computer graphics and mapping techniques to solve a specific complex problem.
