RCPT 436. Research and Technology Applications in Recreation, Parks and Tourism
Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory.

Prerequisites: ITEC 100 or 106 (or equivalent), RCPT 210, 313, and STAT 200.

Prepares students for research and evaluation in recreation, parks and tourism. Computer skills and/or applicable technology will be used to conduct a research project during the semester. Instruction is related to applied research projects and how computer examination applications can be used to enhance assessment, management, evaluation, and program delivery.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Students will be responsible for conducting an applied research project, updating the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism homepage, utilizing the World Wide Web, creating an individual homepage, and developing advanced skills in Microsoft Office which currently includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Specific functions include creating graphs, scanning documents, digital photography, merging data, creating and sorting label, etc. Other software instruction may include  PrintShop Deluxe, PaintBrush, RecWare, and Photo Enhancer depending on the specific type of research project that has been designated for the class.

Each student will:

1. be expected to understand survey research.
2. be an active participant in a research project.
3. be expected to know ALL program application.
4. complete all written assignments on Microsoft Word ( APA format).
5. provide program training for new students in the department.
6. participate in a group service project.
7. develop a personal homepage.

1. be responsible for assigned readings, handouts, and other designated assignment.
2. be able to select the appropriate computer application and solve various problems as assigned (including the group service project).
3. assist in instructional support throughout the course.
4. take a comprehensive final examination.
5. maintain a "journal" with appropriate responses for activities.
6. complete designated hours of "learning center support".
