LEISURE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY

RCPT 200. Leisure in Contemporary Society.
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisites: Freshman or sophomore standing; or permission of chairperson.

Examines the growth and development of leisure as an industry and the importance of leisure experiences in the lives of individuals.  Emphasis is on understanding the physical, psychosocial, economic, political, and experiential aspects of leisure.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course is designed to study the importance of balancing work and leisure in an individual's life. It will examine motivation and need for leisure, the criteria which determine leisure choices and the benefits and negative aspects of leisure behavior. The community, regional, national and global leisure trends and impact will be examined including the contribution of leisure to quality of life.

Students will have the opportunity to examine their own leisure behavior and discuss the impact of that behavior on their lives and the University community.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

This course will involve the reading and review of the text as well as lectures and class discussion. Students will be asked to keep a daily journal of their thoughts as they apply to the course material. In addition, participation will be encouraged and in-class informal writing will be used to help examine concepts and theories.  Students will also be asked to record their activities for a period of time and write a paper which analyzes the balance between work and leisure, the type of leisure participated in, the reasons for these selections and the impact of those choices on the students'lives.  Finally students will be asked to research a specific aspect of leisure behavior and orally present that information to the class.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe in writing his/her leisure behavior.
2. Identify and discuss at least five needs and motivations which determine an individual's selection of leisure activities.
3. Describe in writing leisure activity selection and the impact of those selections on the quality of life of individuals and communities.
4. Describe in writing at least five American norms and values and their impact on leisure behavior.
5. Identify and discuss each type of leisure service delivery system.

  1. Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student's success will be determined by evaluation of two tests, a comprehension final, a written analysis of leisure, a journal, and an oral presentation.
