ITEC 340. Database I
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisite: ITEC 110 and ITEC 220 (both with grade of “C” or better).

A breadth first introduction to database systems including the relational model, SQL, security, database design, and stored procedures. Students who have received credit for INSY 383 or CPSC 440 may not receive credit for ITEC 340.

2. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course will emphasize the concepts and structures necessary to model and manipulate large sets of data. The topics include:

1. Introduction to database concepts
2. Client-server model
3. Database systems and data query, manipulation, and description languages
4. Relational database model and concepts
5. Database design and normalization
6. Web-based database applications
7. Database performance and tuning
8. Stored procedures and triggers
9. Language extensions for databases
10. Data security
11. Data integrity and reliability
12. Distributed databases

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Techniques of database design and implementation are discussed and practiced. Various projects are assigned to give students experience in database management.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

To provide information technology students with the knowledge and skills to design and implement database systems.

5. Assessment Measures

Students will be evaluated based on several given projects and a minimum of two examinations.
