ARRANGING AND ORCHESTRATION
MUSC518. Arranging and Orchestration
Three hours lecture (3)
Prerequisite: MUSC212
Scoring for various band and orchestral ensembles; vocal and instrumental arranging. Includes the study, preparation and performance of scores.
1. Basic elements of the instruments.
a. Transposition
b. Best and complete ranges
c. French, German and Italian names of instruments and musical terms
d. Awkward or impractical passages
2. Arranging or orchestrating for:
a. Woodwinds
b. Brass
c. Strings
d. Voices
e. Combinations of the above
The course will include lectures, demonstration of instruments, listening to recorded examples in class and analyzing scores.
Students are expected to acquire knowledge of the capabilities of voice and instruments and skills necessary to arrange music for instrumental and vocal ensembles. Students registered for graduate credit are expected to complete a research paper or prepare at least one additional arrangement for large instrumental ensemble.
Most arrangements will be played or sung and will be graded. Written tests will be administered on the ranges, transposition and foreign names of the instruments.
