CRJU 645. Management of Community-based Corrections
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: Graduate Standing
Integrated and comprehensive overview of theory and techniques used in organizing, developing, managing, and supervising agencies associated with the concept of community-based correctional services.
The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive overview of theory and techniques used in organizing and developing community-based program from an effectiveness-based perspective. The major areas addressed in the course are:
The course will include lectures, class discussions, group problem-solving models, guest speakers, and film as learning methods in presenting the course content.
Each student will be required to complete a research paper on a specific issue relating to the content of the course. This paper will provide students an opportunity to explore the pros and cons of capital punishment and its place in the American Criminal Justice System.
Students' will be given several examinations during the semester. Each examination will focus on the textbooks, selected articles, lecture materials, guest speakers and film.
1. To clarify and define various professional roles in correctional practice.
2. To articulate the fundamental obligations of the corrections profession.
3. To establish a basis for realistic choices and commitment in correctional programs.
4. To develop a step-by-step instructions for designing, implementing, managing and assessing community-based services.
Assessment of the students' completion of the course is based on grades for several examinations, student presentations and the research papers.
The instructor may utilize "field trips" in order to help the student gain practical insights into organizational problems/solutions. Corrections officials may be utilized as guest speakers.
