MUSC 191:291:391:491. Topics in the Arts & Entertainment Business
One-three hours lecture, two-six hours field study (1-3).

Prerequisites: MUSC 104 and permission of instructor.

Variable topic course. This sequence of courses will study major topics and issues in the Arts & Entertainment fields. The class content will draw from important and relevant industry issues, current events, and individual student interests and projects. (May be taken again for credit.)

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

This sequence of courses is designed to give students an in-depth, detailed understanding of an area of interest in the Arts & Entertainment Industry. The courses will also increase the students' knowledge base in the field through the investigation into various relevant areas of the industry. A special emphasis will be placed on the students' ability to apply and integrate technology into projects and regular course work.

Though the specific course content will vary depending on particular research areas chosen by students, the following areas will be addressed:

( 3 ) Copyright and Legal Issues

( 4 ) Project Management and Implementation

( a ) Strategic Planning
( b ) Documentation
( c ) Presentation

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This sequence of courses will offer students the opportunity to design and implement a research project which applies relevant topics in Arts Administration and/or Arts & Entertainment Industry Management. The format of the courses will consist of weekly lectures; a full-semester individual or group project; and regular communication with the instructor and other members of the class via technology. Students will be required to complete regular assignments and project progress reports; become knowledgeable about industry resources; and be active participants in class discussions.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

The goal of this sequence of courses is for the student to gain a more detailed and comprehensive understanding of a particular area of the Arts & Entertainment Industry. This will be achieved upon successful completion of the following objectives:

Students will be assessed via their regular attendance, class participation, weekly assignments, oral and written presentations, and realization of their proposed project.

  1. Other Course Information

Students majoring in Music Business must complete each course with a grade of C or better in order to receive credit towards their degree program.
