FIRST YEAR EAR TRAINING AND SIGHT SINGING
MUSC114:115. First Year Ear Training and Sight Singing
Two hours laboratory (1:1).
Prerequisite (MUSC114): A satisfactory score on the Music Fundamentals Test or completion of MUSC110 with a grade of "C" or better.
Prerequisite: (MUSC115): Completion of MUSC114 with a grade of "C" or better.
Development of aural skills through exercises in sight singing, rhythmic reading and music dictation.

IV. Sight sing and take dictation with melodies in major and minor keys having scalewise motion or intervals in the tonic triad, simple time, divided beat, treble and bass clefs.

V. Sight sing and take dictation with melodies in major and minor keys, all diatonic intervals, the divided and subdivided beat, simple and compound time, all clefs
The class is conducted as a group practice time for the skills taught in the course. The practice takes the form of singing scales, intervals, and exercises, sight singing melodies from the board and from the textbook, writing exercises from the board and from memory, taking rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic dictation, and other appropriate exercises. Students work individually outside of class time with assigned materials, such as the Temporal Acuity Program and computerized drills.
At the conclusion of MUS 114, the student will be able to sing and write seven scales in all keys (pentatonic scales on so, la, and do: diatonic major scale; three forms fo minor scales: pure harmonic, melodic); sing and write inversions of two chords (tonic chord in major and tonic chord in minor); sing and write melodies from the assigned memory list; sight sing and take dictation with melodies in major and minor keys having scalewise motion or intervals in the tonic triad, simple time, divided beat, treble and bass clefs.
At the conclusion of MUS 115, the student will be able to sing and write inversions of five chords (chords on scale degrees two, three, four, five, and seven); sing and write chord progressions using the tonic, dominant seventh, and subdominant chords in major keys; sing and take dictation with melodies in major and minor keys, all diatonic intervals, the divided and subdivided beat, simple and compound time, all clefs.
In-class tests, scores on laboratory assignments such as the Temporal Acuity Program and computerized ear training programs, final examination.
