MUSC110. Introduction to Music Theory
Three hours lecture; two hours laboratory (4).

Introduction to the discipline of music theory including study of terminology, historical perspective, basic knowledge and concepts, and related reading and aural skills.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

The purpose of this course is to assist students in developing a better and more thorough understanding of the basic elements of music. These elements include:

1. Musical Notation
2. Rhythm and Meter
3. Major Mode
4. Minor Mode
5. Intervals
6. Triads
7. Chord Function
8. Voice Leading

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

A variety of approaches will be utilized to promote and help students develop music reading skills and understanding. These activities will include playing, singing, analyzing and creating music.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of this course, each student will demonstrate:

1. Ability to read and perform music on a solo instrument (recorder).
2. Ability to write and analyze music.
3. Ability to play musical keyboards.
4. Ability to hear and develop a sensitivity to the basic elements in music and music performance.
5. Ability to understand and utilize the basic elements of musical syntax, namely, musical notation, rhythm and meter, modes, intervals, triads, chord function and voice leading.

  1. Assessment Measures

Grades will be determined by in-class tests, performance on solo instruments and a written final placement test.

  1. Other Course Information

In addition to regular class activities, the instructor will use a computer to reinforce concepts and to illustrate further musical problems discussed in lectures.
