MUSC102. Fundamentals of Music Therapy
Two hours lecture (2).

Principles and practice in the field of music therapy. Required of all music therapy majors and open to students in other curricula with permission of instructor.

2. Detailed Description of Course

The purpose of this course is to survey basic literature in music therapy, basic assumptions and practices, and to orient the student to clinical applications of music as therapy. Course content will include:

• Definition of Music Therapy
  • Discussion of Therapy
  • Discussion of Music and its' various uses
  • Use of Music as Therapy
• Survey of Components of music and their relationship to therapy
• History of Therapeutic uses of Music
• Discussion of application of music therapy to major areas of disabilities
  • Mental Retardation
  • Mental Illness
  • Physical Disabilities
  • Educational Disabilities
  • Geriatrics
  • Sensory Disabilities
• Discussion of Professional Ethics
• Discussion of Professional Standards of Clinical Practice

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

An informal lecture format will be employed including opportunities for experiential music therapy. Research and writing of papers will be emphasized.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will:

• Define music therapy
• Provide a foundation upon which to develop advanced music therapy techniques and skills
• Write and report in an appropriate style

5. Assessment Measures

Graded assignments will include tests, written papers, participation and attendance.
