FORECASTING FOR DESIGN
DSNM 493. Forecasting for Design
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: DSNM 420 (Grade of “C” or better), and senior standing.
Methods and procedures for forecasting product and market trends in the apparel and interior industry. The capstone course for merchandising students. Student cannot receive credit if previously taken DSNF 423.
The student will examine methods for researching and creating trend forecasts that impact a product’s materials, color, style, finish, packaging, positioning, and sales. Topics included are: trend tracking; forecasting; product positioning; market segmentation; production timelines; logistics; and forecasting research techniques.
Course content is delivered through lecture. Active learning techniques will be employed to stimulate student learning.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
1. Knowledge of the resources used in the industry for research.
2. Critical thinking in trend predictions.
3. Competency in the application of techniques in trend tracking and predictions.
4. Competency in the application of marketing research techniques.
5. Competency in identifying innovative and creative concepts based on market research.
6. Competency in creating professional caliber forecasting reports.
Exams, group projects, and a comprehensive project will be used.
