DSNF 223. Basic Textiles
Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory (3).

Prerequisites: DSNF 123 (Grade of “C” or better).

A study of fibers, yarns, fabrics and finishes for use in consumer textile products. Emphasis is placed on investigation of fibers/yarns/fabrics/ for apparel products.

  1. Detailed Description of Content of Course

In this course, the student will learn to analyze fabrics. The topics covered are fiber, yarn, and fabrication identification, characteristics and properties; aesthetic and functional finishes (to include methods of coloration); end product concerns due to fiber/yarn/fabric/finish; and textile/apparel legislation.

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture will be used to present fiber/yarn/fabric/finish concepts. In the laboratory the student will develop a file of the fibers, yarns, fabrics, coloration techniques and finishes discussed in lecture. Lab will concentrate on identification of fiber, yarn, and fabrication as well as the analyses of textile products.
