Art 302. Exhibition Fundamentals
Three hours lecture or seminar (3).

Investigates the management of the visual arts. An upper level course intended for students seeking a concentration in art history and museum studies(MS).

2. Detailed Description of Content of Course

Exhibition Fundamentals is designed to provide the student with a general picture of all aspects of mounting an exhibition: selection, handling, exhibition layout, hanging, labeling, exhibition monitoring, packing and crating, and basic conservation methods through practical experience in the RU Art Museum combined with demonstrations, readings, and discussion. Students are expected to work 45 hours outside of class at the Glencoe Museum in Radford (an average of three hours per week).

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Through lectures, demonstrations, and hands on experience, students will learn all aspects of mounting an exhibition.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to properly handle and present works of art in a professional gallery setting. This course is a valuable experience for students seeking a career in a museum or in art administration.

5. Assessment Measures

A letter grade will be based on attendance, the student’s performance and professional attitude in the completion of assigned tasks, and the written paper and logs. The Director of the Glencoe Museum will verify that you have worked your assigned hours at that museum.

6. Other Course Information

Students will be required to complete readings from the assigned texts.
