Art 282. Typography and Layout Design (2-D)
Two hours lecture, three hours studio. (3)

Prerequisites: Art 280, or permission of the instructor.

2. Detailed Description of the Content of the Course

This course is a study of design aesthetics, the visual organization of information and use of basic letterforms, typographic contrast, hierarchy of information, major type families and typographic grids. Projects allow students to experiment with type and layout from a variety of approaches and examine its possibilities as expressive form in relation to syntax and visual communication.

3. Detailed Description of the Conduct of the Course

Lecture demonstrations and written materials familiarize the student with basic and advanced concepts of typography and layout design. The creative use of hand and computer skills are stressed as well as an understanding of the principles regarding typography and layout design.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of this course the student will have:

• Increased their ability to effectively use the letter, text, grid, and layout by using accompanying creative projects that challenge the student’s comprehension.
• Increased their creative use of typography and layout design principles.

5. Assessment Measures

Assignments and participation in class critiques are graded on the basis of process, creativity, and understanding of design concepts and principles. Attendance and participation in class/lab are included in the overall grade for each assignment.
