MGNT 323. Human Resource Management
Three hours lecture(3).

Introduction to the most important functions of human resource management, including personnel planning, EEO laws, recruitment, job analysis, selection, performance appraisal, compensation, and training.

The primary topics covered will include:

  1. Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

The course will be taught from the perspective of what a general manager needs to know about managing human resources in an organization. The instructional methods include lectures, individual and group case studies, experiential exercises, current event topics, occasional guest speakers, research projects, videos, and/or a final project. The role of human resource management in both small and large organizations is discussed.

  1. Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the basic functions of a human resource manager as well as how a manager should deal with personnel-related responsibilities.
2. Understand basic employment legislation and EEOC applications.
3. Solve human resource management problems.
4. Apply a heightened skills set of improved communication skills.
5. Apply human resource management theories and concepts as a practicing manager.
6. Analyze cross-cultural issues, such as expatriate assignments and foreign recruiting and training.

  1. Assessment Measures

Class attendance and participation is essential in this course; in-class exercises and out-of-class assignments will emphasize skill-building sets, including group as well as individual decision-making, maximizing employee productivity, managing diversity, effective recruitment and selection, and solving other personnel problems. In addition, hourly and final exams, quizzes, and projects may be administered.

Students will be expected to keep current on HRM issues in the news and popular press during the semester.
