PSYCHOLOGY 490. Seminar in Psychology
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: PSYC 121
A presentation and discussion of current topics of interest in psychology.
Psychology 490 is an undergraduate seminar course designed to enable students to read and discuss material from a variety of topic areas within psychology for which there is current interest and importance. Course content is often in response to student demand, but also may be dependent on current social and scientific issues.
The course is designed specifically for an oral discussion and demonstration format. Readings will be assigned and discussed in class. The interpretation of demonstrations in terms of current knowledge and theoretical perspectives is encouraged.
1. To introduce students to examine important subject matter in psychology which is of particular current social or scientific interest.
2. To allow students the opportunity to discuss their interpretations of current issues in Psychology.
3. To encourage students to integrate current issues relevant to psychology into the knowledge gained through other, regularly offered courses in psychology and other disciplines.
4. To encourage students in other disciplines to contribute their knowledge and expertise to an understanding of particular issues in psychology.
Graded assignments will depend on the specific content of the course. While in-class tests may be indicated, emphasis is placed on written assignments or projects conducted outside of the classroom. Class participation also constitutes part of the criteria for evaluation.
Speakers from within as well as outside the academic community my be component of the course.
