PSYCHOLOGY OF THE EXCEPTIONAL CHILD
PSYCHOLOGY 401: Psychology of the Exceptional Child
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisites: PSYC 121, 317
Gives student an understanding of children who are different intellectually, behaviorally, socially and physically from the average child, as well as an understanding of the ecology of an exceptional child (e.g., family, community, professionals). Provides some knowledge of assessment and education of exceptional individuals.

3. Education and Exceptionality
4. Families and Exceptionality
5. Specific Exceptionalities: Giftedness; Disorders in Mental Functioning (learning Disabilities
and Mental Retardation), Behavior, Communication, Hearing, Vision, Physical Abilities, and
Health.
6. Multicultural Perspectives
A lecture format will be used, with some instructors choosing to have student presentation.
1. Students will develop an understanding of exceptional children and their families.
2. To provide an elective course for education majors focusing on the psychological aspects of exceptionality.
Graded assignments may include in-class tests, a final examination, pop quizzes, the assignment of exercise and projects, and class presentations.
