NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
Math 436. Numerical Analysis
Prerequisite: MATH 252 or MATH 255.
A study of algorithms for approximate solutions of scientific computing problems. Students who have earned credit for Math 330 cannot subsequently earn Credit for Math 436.
Floating point arithmetic, single nonlinear equations, one dimensional integration, one dimensional interpolation and curve fitting, linear systems, eigenvalues and Eigen vectors, related computer software, selected additional topics
The particular software used will vary among instructors; for example, packages such as MATLAB, MAPLE, NETLIB, SLATEC, and similar packages may be used. Additional topics may include ones from special functions, systems of nonlinear equations, nonlinear optimization, linear least squares, and special linear systems
Acquire a working knowledge of algorithms and modern computer software for approximating solutions of scientific computing problems.
The assessment measures will vary among instructors and may include in-class examinations, homework assignments, computer projects, and performance in class and in laboratory activities.
Students who plan to work in an applied science need exposure to and hands-on experience with methods and computer software that is applicable to many of the general problems they will encounter. Math 436 is intended to be the course that provides this exposure and experience.
