MATH 140
TRIGONOMETRY AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY
MATH 140. Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry.
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisite: Adequate algebra skills necessary.
Fundamental concepts of plane trigonometry and of plane analytic geometry. Trig functions, trig identities, solving triangles, analytic geometric proofs, conics, parametric equations. Will not satisfy requirements for a major in mathematics. General Education Credit - Mathematical Sciences.
The following topics in trigonometry and plane analytic geometry will be covered.
a) Basic trigonometric functions
b) Composite trigonometric functions
c) Inverse trigonometric functions
d) Analytic trigonometry, identities, solving trigonometric equations
e) Law of sines, law of cosines
f) DeMoivre's theorem
g) Basic analytic geometry concepts
h) Conic sections
i) Rotations, reflections, symetries
j) Polar coordinate system
k) Parametric equations
Primarily the course will be taught by the lecture-discussion method, but some instructors will make use of small groups. Extensive in-class use of graphing calculators will be expected of the students. Other mathematical software may also be required.
The students are expected to develop the skills in trigonometry and analytic geometry needed for continued success in mathematical study.
Graded tasks may include tests, quizzes, homework exercises, papers, class participation, and attendance.
This course is intended for students in mathematics and the sciences, but will suffice for the
general education requirement.
