Three hours lecture (3:3).
Prerequisite: MATH 104, 138, or four years high school math.
Students who have received credit for MATH 151 or MATH 155 may not take MATH 121 for credit. Covers techniques of calculus with particular emphasis on applications to business and other non-mathematical fields; basic ideas of rate of change, differentiation, integration, limits, multiple integration, differential equations and infinite series. Will not satisfy requirements for a major in mathematics. (Math 121 only) General Education Credit - Mathematical Sciences.
Topics covered will include:
(a) Review of Functions
(b) Limits and Continuity
(c) Differentiation and Integration Techniques
(d) Rate of Change
(e) Revenue and Profit Models
(f) Marginal Cost
(g) Maxima-Minima Problems
(h) Chain Rule
(i) Interest Formulas
(j) Growth and Decay Models
(k) Anti-differentiation
(l) Area
(m) Cumulative Values of Functions
(n) Probability Density Function and Expected Values
(o) Partial Derivative
(p) Lagrange Multipliers
(q) Integration of Functions of Several Variables
Most instructors will use the lecture method. Some may require students to work together in small groups. Some may utilize computers and calculators both inside and outside class. In all sections students will be expected to work problems assigned as homework.
Graded tasks may include quizzes, homework exercises, written and oral class participation, attendance, tests, and a final exam.
