SELECTED TOPICS IN APPALACHIAN HISTORY
History 374. Selected Topics in Appalachian History (A)
Three hours lecture (3).
Prerequisite: 3 hours of History at the 100-level
Provides in-depth study of an issue or development of importance to the Appalachian region of the U.S. Subject or subjects investigated vary from semester to semester.
During each semester regardless of the specific course content the main components of the course will be as follows:
1. Lectures to Provide a Background in Appalachian History and Culture.
2. Lectures that Focus on the Specific Topic of Investigation.
3. Directed Student Research on Some Aspect of the Issue Under Discussion.
4. Preparation of a Bibliographical Essay on the Topic Under Investigation.
5. Presentation of Student Research Findings to the Class.
An informal seminar approach is used in which lectures are punctuated with ample discussions, questions, and collaborative learning exercises. The students' presentations before the class make up an integral part of the course conduct.
1. Students will be able to use the analytical tools for investigating a specific issue within a larger discipline.
2. Students will demonstrate the knowledge to understand a specific issue of Appalachian culture and history within the context of regional and national development.
Graded assignments are a final examination and writing assignments including a major semester-long research project.
