CHEM 481:482. Undergraduate Research
Credit Hours (1-3).

Prerequisites: CHEM 301 and junior standing

A laboratory course designed for students wishing to pursue an independent research project. A student make take CHEM 481, 482 for a maximum of six semester hours credit.

2. Detailed Description of Content of the Course

This course gives the student the opportunity to do independent chemical research under the supervision of a faculty member.The course will involve:

1. The selection of a research director and a research project.
2. Doing a literature search on the subject of the search project.
3. Defining the objectives of the research.
4. Performing the laboratory work necessary to fulfill the research objective.
5. An oral presentation of the results of the research project to the faculty of the Chemistry Department.
6. Writing a paper on the research project and the results of the research.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of the Course

CHEM 481, 482 is predominately a laboratory course which introduces the student to chemical research. One semester hour of credit is equivalent to three hours per week of laboratory work. The student may take CHEM 481, 482 for a Maximum of six semester hours.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To allow the student to do independent research under the direction of a faculty member.
2. To make the student aware of the frustrations of research.
3. To help the student develop cognitive thinking abilities.
4. To better prepare the student in giving written and oral reports.

5. Assessment Measures

The student's research director will base the assessment of the student's success on (1) the student's ability to conduct independent research and (2) the student's ability to present the results of their research in both written and oral form.
