1910 Radford State Normal School for Women established. 1938 Now Radford State Teachers College, equitation classes offered 1941 equitation classes discontinued due to shortage of funds. 1944 renamed Radford College, the Women's Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, equitation classes resume. 1961 Radford College forms a riding drill team dubbed the "Redcoats". Comprised of eight girls and almost completely self-funded, their first performance was a the 1st annual Radford College horse show on May Day 1962. 1964 Radford College severs ties with VPI, Radford Riding flourishes. 1960's Awareness of the Redcoats grows. They become "Radford's Ambassadors on Horseback", traveling far and wide to perform. 1972 Radford College begins admitting males, offers first coeducational equitation classes. 1973 Mr. G.C.Neff the "fearless leader" who had led the Redcoats in the past 12 years to greatness, resigns. The drill team continues under the guidance of Sylvia Wilson but without the current eight girls. They resigned as well. 1979 General Assembly grants school status as Radford University. 1980's Funding withdrawn, equitation classes cease, the stables and all land were sold by the then President Dedmon; riders join students at Virginia Tech to form the "Rad-Tech" Riding Team.
1995 VPI funds their team, Rad-Tech Team splits; Since them, the Radford Redcoats have been and independent, self-supporting team. 1999 Carol Gwin, Owner of the Horse Resource at Walnut Springs Stables coaches the Redcoats. 2001 Redcoats Hold First Annual Intercollegiate Horse Show at Walnut Spring, placing second overall in IHSA Zone 4, Region 2. We now practice at Walnut Springs in Blacksburg!
