Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need my own horse?
No, Walnut Spring Stables, where we ride, has plenty of lesson horses for us to use.
How much time will the club consume?
Students who learn to manage their time well will have no problem getting out to ride. Plan on reserving time for 2 lessons per week (about 3 hours of time for travel, tacking up, and riding) and one practice ride, which is uninstructed and may take less time, and can be done any day, including weekends. Also plan on attending our weekly meeting, held once a week, usually in the evening, for one hour. We attend approximately 4 shows per semester, which take only the day they are held. Extra time commitments include, fundraising and community service and also may be necessary while we are preparing to host an intercollegiate show at our barn.
Do I have to compete?
No, competing is not a requirement. Non-competing members are known as "club" members and competing members are "team" members, but all members assemble together. Some members chose to compete in local shows instead of intercollegiate shows, and some do both; it's up to you.
I don't ride huntseat, can I still join?
Certainly, we have members from western, saddle seat, eventing, fox hunting, and dressage backgrounds currently, and welcome any others.
Can I keep my saddle and stuff out at the barn?
Currently there is limited space for riders who do not board a horse at the barn. Saddles are usually OK, any other items you wish to store at the barn should be contained and labeled in some way. Also, it's a good idea to ask where a good spot for your stuff is before you bring it out.
Can I bring my own horse?
Many students in the past have brought their own horses. If you wish to do so, it is important to reserve a stall early, as spots fill quickly. For info on boarding visit our barns website at www.walnutspringstable.com.
