The Psy.D. Program admitted its first group of students in the Spring of 2008 and the following group of 5 students is the inaugural cohort. Students who have agreed to be contacted to answer questions about their experiences can be e-mailed by clicking on their names. Joshua Bradley received his M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Radford University in the Spring of 2006. Soon after graduation he began work as a Supervised Psychologist in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He provided psychological evaluation and therapy services to children, adolescents, and adults. His research interests include social justice issues related to children and adolescents, prevention of mental illness in rural areas, and how rural living influences gender roles. His dissertation topic will be related to social advocacy in practice. After receiving his degree he would like to continue clinical work with adolescents and adults, work to improve awareness of the impact that emotional and psychological issues have on development, and improve assessment services in rural areas. Alexandra M. Herren received her M.S. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Kentucky in 2008. She completed a three semester practicum at the Nest, a center for women, children, and families. Prior to coming to Radford she worked as a mental health associate at an acute mental health hospital. Her research interests include family well-being, military families and individuals, dual diagnoses, rural mental health, and animal assisted therapy. After graduation, Ms. Herren intends to practice family and individual therapy in a rural setting. Additionally, she plans to work toward social justice and parity for rural mental health clients. Jana Moberg received her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Radford University in 2008. She completed her Master’s practicum at Pulaski Correctional Center in Dublin, Virginia. Prior to coming to Radford, she attended Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, where she obtained her B.A. in Psychology in 2006. In Syracuse, she volunteered at a community crisis hotline. Her research interests include resiliency, family dynamics, and forensic issues. She completed a Master’s thesis addressing the rate of incidence of brain abnormality in aggressive populations. After completion of the Psy.D. program, she plans to work in a community setting developing outreach programs. Kevin Simonson received his M.A. in Mental Health Counseling from Marist College in 2008. He completed his internship at the Orange County Department of Mental Health Child and Family Clinic. He is currently carrying out his praticum at Virginia Tech Cook Counseling Center. His research interests include atheism and secularity. Kevin is in the formative stages of his dissertation, which will entail a qualitative study exploring the coping skills between Christians, Buddhists, and Atheists. Post-graduation he plans to move to a rural community where he can provide services.
