Established here at Radford University in the fall of 2004, the Radford University chapter of the Society of Physics Students exists to further education in the field of Physics as well as to better prepare students for their entrance into professional life. As one means of furthering this goal, the RU chapter of SPS as well as the Clubs and Programming committee have partnered that we might present a lecture series in a variety of Physical topics to you this semester. Respected members of both academia and industry have been gathered for this purpose and we welcome you to attend. We hope to see you there.

Speaker Abstracts

Dr. Rhon Keinigs;

    Life as a Physicist at a National Laboratory

    In this talk I will give a perspective of what it is like to work at a National Laboratory such as Los Alamos, where I spent 25 years as a research physicist and project leader.

During this talk I will give an overview of what it is like to work in an organization that has the highest number of Ph.D. physicists and engineers in the world, and I will discuss several of the research projects in which I was involved.  The majority of these projects span a branch of physics known as plasma physics.  Plasma is often called the “4th state of matter”, and the applications of plasma physics encompass areas of research as diverse as trying to model reversals of the Sun’s magnetic field to the making of microchips for computers.
