How do I qualify to become a member of Pi Gamma Mu? Qualifying members are generally juniors, seniors, or graduate students. A student must have completed 20 semester hours in any combination of Social Sciences courses (History, Political Science, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Social Philosophy and have earned a 3.0 of better grade point average in those courses. Graduate students may qualify on the basis of their undergraduate record or by virtue of an exceptional record of achievement in graduate school.
May I use courses taken at other institutions of higher learning to qualify for Pi Gamma Mu? Yes. Many students qualify by virtue of their RU record, but if you are short of hours or GPA, social science hours from other institutions can also be considered. These may not be "selected" hours, but all social science credit from those institutions must be considered.
Why should I join an honor society like Pi Gamma Mu? Beyond a GPA and a college transcript, induction into an honor society is further evidence of one's academic achievement. Membership into Pi Gamma Mu is indication that a student has excelled not only in their major discipline, but in a broad range of related disciplines and is truly an exemplary student. Membership in an honor society is a good indicator for a future employers or graduate school admissions officer.
