 Other Entertainment Opportunities

On Campus Events

Moving off-campus does not mean that you can’t take advantage of the great activities offered at RU.  Starting

during Fall 2003, the Student Activities web-site www.radford.edu/~stuact will have the main Student Activities

Calendar linked to it.  This calendar will list events that take place on campus and can easily be accessed on and off

 campus.

Around RU

The City of Radford and Montgomery County are both full of hot spots for students.  Main Street and Downtown

Radford are lined with shops and restaurants that attract students and members of the community.  Here are some

 other great places to visit.

Area Parks

Bisset, Wildwood, Sunset, Riverview, Sisson Parks and the James Oakley Playing Fields offer a variety of activities.

These parks have shelters, grills and playing fields that members of the community can use.  The largest, Bisset,

stretches along the river with 58 acres of playing fields, tennis courts, a paved jogging path, canoeing, picnic sites

and the community pool.  Not sure where Bisset is?  All you have to do is look down as you cross the bridge to Wal-

Mart.

Radford City Pool

Located on the banks of the New River, Radford City Pool, part of Bisset Park, is opened from Memorial Day

 weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Randolph Park

Located in Dublin, less than 10 miles south on I-81 (Exit 98), Randolph Park offers picnic shelters with grills, playing

fields, a paved track, walking trails, a wheelchair accessible trail, tennis courts, basketball courts, sand volleyball

courts, a playground and the most unique water park in the area.

 Jefferson National Forest

Hiking, camping, mountain biking, picnicking, hunting, and fishing are just a few of the activities that local

residents have to enjoy in the 19,200 acres of the Jefferson National Forest.

 Pandapas Pond

Located in Blacksburg, this one mile hiking loop surrounds this eight-acre body of water and has become a popular

hiking, biking, and fishing spot for locals.

McCoy Falls

You will be hard pressed to find a more crowded spot on the New River.  McCoy Falls, located off of Prices Fork

Rd. has become a popular spot for RU and Virginia Tech students.  Students can enjoy an afternoon of tubing

down the river or just laying out on the rocks.

 Huckleberry Trail

This hiking/bike riding path takes visitors from the New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg through open fields,

rocky hillsides, shaded wooded areas and into downtown Blacksburg.  The Huckleberry Trail runs roughly six miles

 each direction.

 New River Junction

The New River, one of the oldest rivers in the world, is home to a variety of activities.  New River Junction is the

perfect spot to camp, fish, canoe, swim, or go tubing.  Once you make it down the river a bus will return you to

 your campsite or vehicle.

 Cascades

Giles County is home to these two hiking trails lead through dense wooded areas to this secluded, 66 foot high

waterfall and swimming spot.  The round trip distance is roughly five miles.  Not even the icy cold temperatures of

the water can keep the students away.

 Mountain Lake Resort

Built in 1857 and made famous in 1987 by the movie “Dirty Dancing,” Mountain Lake Resort is a secluded resort

located on one of two natural lakes in the state of Virginia.  Located less than 45 minutes away in Giles Co., the

resort offers hiking, boating, cross-country skiing and a great opportunity for a weekend getaway.

southwestern Virginia, Claytor Lake State Park offers a wide variety of activities for water and land enthusiasts.

Easily accessible from Interstate 81 (Exit 101), the park features the only full service marina in the state park

system. In addition, there are miles of hiking trails, swimming, boat rentals, fishing, camping facilities, cabins and a

visitor center. The visitor center is located in the historic Howe House.
