Goals

Course Goals: By the end of this course you will have learned how to succeed academically, personally, and socially at RU and beyond. In order to assist you in accomplishing this, each of the five chapters is focused on a general theme with more specific learning goals that reflect the course material. These specific learning goals for each chapter are listed below.

 

Chapter 1: The RU Community and You

  • Locate and appropriately use university and local resources to facilitate your academic and personal success.
  • Understand the history and tradition of RU that make it so unique.
  • Develop positive social relationships in your RU campus community.
  • Identify recreational and social opportunities on-campus and in the surrounding area.
  • Understand and personally relate to social and other adjustment issues that are common for any student when beginning college.

Chapter 2: College and You -- Personal Growth

  • Identify and understand your purpose and motivation for attending college, while beginning to develop a personal success plan for your time at RU.
  • Manage your time efficiently and effectively while being able to integrate short and long-term goals into your educational plan.
  • Learn money management strategies to assist you in overcoming common financial challenges faced by college students.
  • Understand the effects of identity theft and how to protect yourself against this crime.
  • Begin to understand your personal values and how they relate to what is expected of you as an open-minded RU student who demonstrates academic and personal integrity.

Chapter 3: Academics, You and RU

  • Understand what faculty members expect of you in order to be academically successful.
  • Develop a working relationship with faculty outside of the classroom.
  • Learn and apply various effective study and test-taking strategies.
  • Identify your personal learning style to facilitate success in your academic work. Make well-reasoned decisions that involve critical thinking and problem solving techniques.
  • Learn to navigate the library and use its resources.

Chapter 4: For the Health of It -- Wellness and You

  • Describe positive actions you can take to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle at RU.
  • Make educated personal decisions involving smoking, alcohol, drug use, and sex.
  • Be aware of sexual assault and safety issues on college campuses and assist survivors of sexual assault should it occur to you or someone you know.
  • Learn effective stress and relaxation strategies that will aid in maintaining your health during and beyond college.
  • Identify and further investigate your spirituality and faith and how they relate to developing a full and healthy life.

Chapter 5: What's next? Beyond Your Initial Transitions to RU

  • Identify and utilize strategies to choose an academic major and to plan for your future career.
  • Understand how service experiences, getting involved on campus, and citizenship relate to your development as a leader who future employers desire.
  • Articulate the value and purpose of the General Education program for you as a RU student.
  • Become competent and actively involved in utilizing the university catalog and consulting with your academic advisor to clarify and follow educational policies and degree requirements.
  • Communicate and learn effectively in teams, orally, and in your written work.
