Study Facility Policies
Hours:
Monday – Thursday (1pm – 8pm)
Walker Hall, Room 153
The study facility is designed to support your academic success as a student at Radford University. The best way to utilize your 6-hour commitment is to find a period of 1-2 hours every day and build it into your schedule. To maximize the effectiveness of the study facility, you will not be allowed any more than 3 hours per day to be counted towards your contractual commitment. Of course, you are welcome to use the facility as much as you want.
As a SORTS student, you agree you will:
- Come prepared to study with books, paper, pens, syllabi, etc.
- Make yourself reasonably comfortable either at a desk or table.
- Keep breaks to a minimum. I understand it takes blocks of concentrated time to process the information; starting and stopping will make it difficult to focus.
- Ask questions of the Peer Mentor staff regarding assignments, studying and exam strategies, writing style, spelling, editing, and the like.
- Use the resources that are available to me. There are handouts regarding study skills, time management, academic resources, places of referrals for further assistance and the like. Please ask the Peer Mentor staff for assistance.
- Sign in and out every time I leave the Study Facility, regardless of how long or short your break will be (excluding bathroom breaks).
- Use the table outside of NSP for academic computer use. I understand that no more than 6 students can use this space at a time, and two tablet computers will be available for use in this area. I understand that these computers are for class work only. I understand that the Peer Mentors will monitor this and if I receive three warnings for inappropriate use of the computers (including Instant Messager or email conversations), I will lose my computer priviledges for the rest of the semester. I also understand that I am limited to 1 hour of computer usage in study hall per day.
- Keep track of the hours that you spend at the Study Facility online at https://sorts.asp.radford.edu/login.aspx
- Discard your trash and leave the area where you were studying clean for the next student.
- Provide proper documentation to the Peer Mentor in the study hall by 8 p.m. on Thursday if I wish to have credit for 1 hour (out of the 6 required/week) at the LARC for that week.
- Respect the Peer Mentors and NSP staff as I interact with them inside and outside of study hall. I agree to cooperate with their requests as they relate to enforcement of study hall policies.
As a SORTS student, you agree you will not:
- Talk during study hours. I understand that it is distracting not only for myself but also makes it more difficult for others to concentrate on their own work. Only conversations about academically related topics will be allowed.
- Sleep - I understand that it is very difficult to read and work with your eyes closed. I will keep my head off the table while reading. I understand that after one warning, I will be asked to leave the study hall. Should I be asked to leave during one visit, and I am found sleeping again during another visit, I will have to meet with Tom or April to discuss my behavior.
- Use a CD player, iPod, cell phone (including text messaging) or other such device. I understand that after one warning, I will be asked to leave the study hall. Should I be asked to leave during one visit and found using a CD player, iPod, cell phone, or other such device during a subsequent visit, I will have to meet with Tom or April to discuss my behavior.
- Bring magazines and/or newspapers unrelated to class work.
- Bring food into study hall. I understand drinks are allowed but that I must be VERY careful with them.
- Bring friends from outside the SORTS program unless they have received prior approval from the SORTS Office.
- Leave all of my hours for the last day in case an emergency comes up. If I am sick, or will be unable to complete my hours for any other reason, I understand that it is necessary for me to notify the SORTS Program Office. I understand that if the NSP staff does not hear from me, it will be assumed that I am in violation of my contract.
