Greeks: “An Army Of One”
Rod O’Neal
The common stereotype of students that go Greek is that of hard-partying
young men and women who are only seeking a good time. While in
some cases this can
be true, RU’s Greek Week proved that there can be a good mix of both fun
and charity.
“The theme of this week is ‘An Army of One’,” said Coordinator
Chris Smith. “We thought it would be appropriate because of what’s
going on overseas and to be supportive of the troops.”
Greek Week was jumpstarted by an aquatic challenge for the Greek organizations
including a big splash contest and relay races.
The featured event of the week was Friday night’s USO Air Bands Show which
featured choreographed routines to pop songs. Admission into the event was a
dollar or a canned food item to go to the needy.
“This is the most enjoyable part of the week for me; the Air Bands,” said
participant Billy Barker.
“The canned food has always been a philanthropy we’ve always done,” said
Smith. “It’s something we’ve always had for this event because
it’s always been popular and it was a great way to do philanthropy while
we’re doing something fun.”
Alpha Sigma Tau previously had won the event three straight years but failed
to participate this year. Sigma Kappa won this year’s event breaking that
streak.
