Cell Phones in the Community by Chris Damico
Take a walk on the campus of any college or university and you will find one thing in common: everyone is talking on a cell phone. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that of the 6.3 billion people in the world today, there are more than 200 million cell-phone owners today. This comes out to approximately 1 out of every 32 people having a cell phone, including 43 million users between the ages of 10 and 24.
Cell phones first came out about a dozen years ago. They were big, inaccessible and did not have very many features. Nowadays, cell phones have 3-way calling, caller-id, camera phones, video capabilities and even walkie-talkie functions.
Many people, especially college kids, are divided on the issue of owning/talking on a cell phone. Those who are against them say that they can be expensive, controlling, and are impersonal. Those for them cannot imagine their life without them. Both sides can agree that they do come in handy, for when you are on the job or in an emergency.
Whatever you think, cell phones are here to stay and they will only keep getting bigger. If you are thinking of purchasing a cell phone, you should first think what you want out of it and then decide on a company.
