Annotated Web Resources

The field of geography, particularly in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and technical geography, is expanding.  This website contains resources on geography study, with emphasis on my own concentration, technical geography.  I have linked many resources for those who wish to pursue a career in geography, or who are thinking of studying it at the university level.  If you are currently working on a project and need free maps or spatial data, or would just like to locate a free map, you will find convenient websites linked here.

Radford University resources

Radford University Department of Geography
The geography homepage at my university.  Here you will find the faculty, courses and requirements for geography study at RU.

GIS Center at Radford University
Another valuable resource from the Geography Department, it has many things technical geographers may need; USGS Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for every county in Virginia, raster spatial data for Virginia quadrangles, and others.

Online maps

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection
One of the most comprehensive free map resources on the Internet.  Over five thousand well-digitized paper maps from the University of Texas-Austin’s map library are available here, and feature every area of the world, plus many historical and thematic maps.  The first place to visit when searching for a map!

National Atlas
A website of free maps operated by the federal Department of the Interior.  Here you have access to a wide variety of United States maps produced by the federal government, such as political maps (including current congressional districts), and maps across the environmental spectrum (with links to EPA website maps), to name but a few.

Redistricting Virginia
The official site of the Virginia Division of Legislative Services (DLS) redistricting.  It contains precise GIS information on previous and current state and national legislative districts in Virginia by the body that maintains the boundaries.

Yahoo! Maps
A convenient place to look up a street address.

Professional and career planning

Association of American Geographers
The premiere national scientific society for geographers and geography research.  This site contains useful information on careers in geography, academic departments in North America, and many pages for helping geography students decide what to study.  Members can also browse and post job postings.

Graduate School Programs in Geography
This is an excellent listing of available grad schools with geography programs.  It covers the United States by regional groupings, and separately lists international programs.  It also features hyperlinks to the schools and a short description of the particulars of geography specialized at each school.

GeoCommunity GIS Jobs and Careers
GeoCommunity Career Center is a vast job resource, with postings for many different areas associated with GIS work.

Environmental Jobs and Careers
Another job posting website, but specializing in environmental-related work.

NGA Student Employment
My place of employment for this summer, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) analyzes spatial intelligence for the Department of Defense.  The Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP) detailed here is also offered by a number of other federal agencies and private contractors.
