1. You are the president of a toy company. At the end of each
year, you have a holiday party for
company employees. Last year one employee drank too much at the
party and had a car accident while he was driving home. He’s alive,
but had to spend several months in the hospital. It’s November, time
to prepare for this year’s party. What do you do?
0r
It’s July, the company picnic is coming up in 3 weeks for families.
Last year employees drank too much at the picnic and had shouting matches
and shoving over games being played. The police were called. It’s time
to prepare for this year’s picnic. What do you do?
2. You have become friendly with a person you work with. Recently you have noticed the smell of alcohol on that person’s breath in the morning. You have heard other members of your department make comments or jokes about it. What do you do?
3. Some people believe that random drug tests are necessary for sensitive occupations (e.g., railroad workers) because innocent people are victimized when such an employee makes a mistake due to drug use. What jobs would you consider sensitive and why?
4. In your opinion, what should happen to the employee who tests positive for drug use? Should he or she be fired? Be helped? How many chances should he/she be given? Explain your reasoning.
5. Many people use illegal drugs while not working, such as on the weekends and vacations. Should employers penalize workers for their use of drugs when not at work? How much should employers be allowed to know about what employees do while not working?
6. Explain the similarities and differences among the three types of drug testing (pre-employment, probable cause, and random testing). Why do some people support random testing over the other two forms? Which type of testing do you feel is best? Why?
7. Throughout the class, we have viewed drugs on the job being an employee problem. Suppose your immediate supervisor/or their supervisor had the drug problem, brainstorm all actions possible to pursue - you are in a unit with 3 peer employees. Rank your top 4 methods your unit will most likely follow.
8. You are working in a small-medium company and a drug problem has been identified among the workforce. No program exists for these drug users. What measures would you take to handle this problem?
The additional credit assignments are due on October 5 to be reported in class.
Assignments - for 4 credits
The additional assignments are to examine the current trends of e-screening and report to the class on this workplace drug technique and do both final exams. This is due on October 5.
In addition, you will identify the techniques and procedure of testing NCAA athletes and professional athletes in selected sports. This is due on October 5.
