Final Cut Pro 5 for Mac OS X. USA: Peachpit Press, 2006. (Final Cut Pro 6 will be released in September of 2007) Strongly Recommended: External Hard drive with 300+ gigabytes of memory and firewire cable. Minimum of two 60 or 63 minute (SP) mini-DV videotapes for digital camcorder and editing. At least 2-3 Blank CD-R Discs. (Note: CD-RW discs will not work.) One pair of headphones with miniplug jack. Course Description Four hours of lecture and laboratory. May be repeated, but no more than 9 hours of MSTD Portfolio may be taken for credit. Prerequisite: 45 hours of college credit completed and MSTD 146, 246, 346, and 347. Provides specific, directed activity for advanced students in production, editing, and other experiential learning. (Formerly MSTD 450. Students cannot receive credit for both MSTD 450 and MSTD 482.) This course is designed to allow you to complete a portfolio of your best work, ready to submit to potential employers. You will be working largely on your own or with other students in a team effort. This is not a lecture course. The instructor serves primarily in an advisory capacity and it is assumed that you already know how to use the equipment and produce professional quality work. Broadcasts will require a team effort and will require you to work closely with the Journalism students in MSTD 481. Course Objectives 1. To provide hands-on experience for advanced students 2. To prepare students for a professional working environment 3. To encourage cooperative team efforts in which leadership is exercised 4. To develop portfolios of students work in preparation for job searches Students with Disabilities If you are seeking classroom accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you are required to register with the Disability Resource Office (DRO). The DRO is located in room 34 of Tyler Hall, the phone is 831-6350, and on the Web at HYPERLINK "Http://www.radford.edu/~dro/" Http://www.radford.edu/~dro/. To receive academic accommodations for this class, you must obtain the proper DRO forms and meet with Dr. Turner at the beginning of the semester. Assignments Meeting deadlines is extremely important in all media corporations and so you are expected to turn in all assignments by the due date. It is your responsibility to make sure you understand the requirements prior to undertaking a project. If the instructions are unclear, ask questions. Claiming that you did not understand the project requirements after it is evaluated and handed back is not a valid excuse. Scheduling problems with interviews or reporters are not acceptable excuses for missed deadlines. It is your responsibility to make sure your work is submitted by the due date. Lab Schedule Because there are limited numbers of cameras and editing systems available at any given time, students must work outside of normal class time in order to complete their projects by the due dates. Students will be assigned to either work in the library (the sign up procedure will be explained during the training) or at the Final Cut Pro Studio in Madison Hall. Library hours are 8:00am 4:30pm Monday through Friday. You can sign up by calling 831-5974 or online at HYPERLINK "http://www.radford.edu/tlc" www.radford.edu/tlc. Those assigned to the station in Madison Hall will be limited to the same hours as the library. Additional evening hours will be posted in Madison Hall. These additional hours will be available on a sign-up basis to any student regardless of their assigned locations. It would be extremely advantageous to have an external hard drive if you think you might want to take advantage of the extended hours. You must adhere to your scheduled time on the machines. If you refuse to leave when asked, campus security will be called and judicial charges may be filed. Any exceptions to this policy and any other Media Studies Department equipment policies must be verified in writing by the course instructor and the Media Studies Department Lab Coordinator. Students are responsible for the equipment they check out. Any equipment that is damaged or lost will be repaired or replaced at the students expense (see equipment checkout forms for specific checkout rules). Note: (1) The entire class is held responsible for the condition of the labs. Periodic checks will be made of the lab. Any time that it is found unclean, everyones project(s) done in that particular lab will be deemed unacceptable for that week. This may directly affect final grades. (2) Eating or drinking in any of the labs is not permitted. If you bring any type of food or drink into the labs (including gum or candy) and refuse to leave when asked by a faculty member, the Media Lab Coordinator, or a Work-Study student, security will be called, and judicial charges may be filed. Grading and Assessment The following projects are required to be completed successfully in order to receive a passing grade in this course. 1. Newsbreak. Work as production to a two-minute newscast, similar to a local cut-in to a national morning newscast such as Today or The Early Show. The newscast must contain at least one story with an OTS (over the shoulder) graphic. The other material must be VOs that your partner writes and that you edit from CNN Newsource material. 60 points. 2. TV news packages and revisions for Newscast #1. Newsworthy material, at least 1:30 in length plus anchor lead in assigned script format. Minimum of two interviews, timely material, appropriate cover video, use of nat sound, standup bridge or close. 100 points. 3. Edited radio report on CD. In-depth, long-form NPR-style feature or hard news report, 3:00 plus anchor lead. Must include multiple interviews and nat sound. 100 points. 4. Participate as crew on Newscast #1. In order to receive credit, you must arrive on time and carry out your studio assignments in a timely manner. 50 points. 5. TV news package and revisions for Newscast #2. Newsworthy material, at least 1:30 in length plus anchor lead in assigned script format. Minimum of two interviews, timely material, appropriate cover video, use of nat sound, standup bridge or close. 100 points. 6. Participate as crew on Newscast #2. In order to receive credit, you must arrive on time and carry out your studio assignments in a timely manner. 50 points. 7. Participate as crew for As-Live Interviews. In order to receive credit, you must arrive on time and carry out your studio assignments in a timely manner. Interviews take place twice during the semester. 30 points each time. (2 x 30 = 60 points) 8. You must submit a typed resume and portfolio (DVD and/or CD) of your best work. You may use material from any class, internship or professional/freelance experience. 100 points. (Note: You cannot pass the class without submitting the portfolio and resume.) The following projects are optional. 1. Individual 5-10 minute project (concept must be approved by the instructor by the end of Week 3). This can be a documentary, narrative story, or a variety of other possible types of project. 100 points. 2. Shadow Experience. Minimum day-long (eight consecutive hours) shadowing a media professional. You must have the company and individual noted and approved by the instructor before your shadow experience. You must also submit a one-page, first person description of your day. 50 points. 3. Open/Close of NRV News Program 100 points. 4. PSA. Find a real client and create a 30 or 60 second PSA for the client. You must also submit a one-page, description of what you did for the project. 100 points. 5. Radio News Feature Editor. You will work with a producer in the 481 class to prepare radio news features for broadcast on WVRU. 50 points. Note: For each of the projects where you turn in something (required projects 1, 2, 3, 5 and all optional projects) you are required to fill out a Production Critique Form (Available on WebCT) and submit it on WebCT before coming to class on the assigned day. Do not forget this. You will be very unhappy to not receive any grade for your hard work because you simply forgot to turn in this form. Grading Scale A 800-725 points B 724-650 points C 649-550 points D 549-500 points F 499 points or fewer Projects will be assessed for effort, shooting, editing, scheduling, deadlines, accuracy, fairness, timeliness, interest, thoroughness and creativity, combined with your participation in class, your ability to work as part of a team, your willingness to seek outside critiques, and in general, the passion with which you approach your work. As you can see, completing all the required projects successfully will enable you to pass the course with a C grade. In order to receive an A or a B grade you will need to successfully complete at least two of the optional projects. Projects such as the news packages that allow for resubmissions will be evaluated using the above criteria. They will initially be judged acceptable or unacceptable. If acceptable, you will be awarded points based on how well you fulfill the criteria. If judged unacceptable, you will be given written and oral feedback and will need to correct the project for the second submission before receiving any points. If the second project is deemed unacceptable, you will receive no credit for the project. Missing the first date means that your next submission is automatically your second submission. Note: If any of your required projects are not accepted you will immediately drop from A, B, or C to a D. It is important that you understand this at the beginning of the semester, rather than arguing about the fairness of this policy at the end of the semester. As in most classes, you will find that I do not give you a grade; you earn it. Because this is a capstone portfolio course you have produced similar projects in several prerequisite courses, so you should understand what makes a particular project acceptable or not. Attendance Policy In the media world you must be dependable. Anyone exhibiting chronic absenteeism or tardiness will be fired without hesitation. While you do not get paid in the normal sense for carrying out your assignments, you should think of your grade as a managerial evaluation of your performance. Consequently, you should exhibit the same sense of professionalism in this class as you would working for a media corporation. Tardiness or absence will result in a lower final grade. I will sometimes communicate with the class via e-mail. All messages will be e-mailed to your Radford account and you are responsible for knowing this information. This means that if you use another e-mail provider, you will still need to access your Radford account. You need to check your e-mail daily so you will be aware of meeting dates and project updates as well as upcoming events. Honors Policy Plagiarism (the presentation of someone elses work as ones own) and cheating (dishonesty or deception in fulfilling academic requirements) will not be tolerated. Students violating this policy will fail the course and the infraction will be reported to the university judiciaries. By accepting admission to Radford University, each student makes a commitment to understand, support, and abide by the University Honor Code without compromise or exception. Refer to your Student Handbook for details, which is now located on-line. The recording of images is an art; therefore, the presentation of images created by someone other than you will be considered plagiarism. Each project must be your own work. Fair use of pre-recorded images and sound is allowable for research and teaching on a one-time non-commercial basis under the 1976 Copyright Act as long as proper attribution is made. If you plan on using the material over again or plan to broadcast it, you must first have written authorization from the copyright holder. If you have further questions regarding this topic, please let me know. Calendar We will try to adhere to the schedule, but the instructor reserves the right to make changes as needed.
