Tentative Schedule and Assignments

 

Note:  Please bring your textbook to every class session. Also bring all readings that have been assigned for that class period. Readings from the textbook are labeled BG (for Bedford Guide), and other readings are labeled PH (for photocopies handed out in class). All readings should be read prior to the class period for which they are listed; the date is the due date. Additional assignments and other modifications may be added as needed. Italicized sections are assignments, non-italicized information refers to in-class activities.

 

T-August 24                   Introductions, syllabus review, introductory writing.

 

                                    Assignment: Describe your writing process starting with a simile,

“Writing is like…” In an additional paragraph describe the process you usually go through to write a paper. Use the activity from BG 12 as a guide.

R-September 2              Narrative guidelines, discussion of sample narratives, (What makes these stories worth telling?)  Submit narrative topic.

 

T-September 7               Grading guidelines for narratives, peer review demonstration, skills checklist, peer review sign-up and forms.

 

                                    BG 46-50, writing from recall / 296-299, transitions / 323-33, peer editing and editing for concision.

 

R-September 9              COMPLETED Narrative rough draft due, + three copies for your review team.

T-September 14             PEER REVIEW  Peer Review Worksheet

 

R-September 16             Meet in Walker 225 with your peer reviews and your drafts. Bring your draft on a floppy disk. If you do not have Microsoft Word, you need to e-mail your draft to yourself and open it from the lab. This usually works.

 

                                    Targeted skills: my revision notes on your draft, active subjects and verbs, use of dialogue. Revision notes

 

T-September 21             Narrative final draft due at the beginning of class, stapled, and in a pocket folder with the accompanying materials and writer’s memo.
