The McGlothlin Awards, begun in 1999, consists of two prizes of $25,000.  A teacher from both grades K-5 and grades 6-12 who demonstrate the highest ideals of their profession, will be the recipients of these awards.  The 51 eligible school divisions are located in both the western half of Virginia and adjacent school divisions in West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. The McGlothlin Foundation began this awards program to encourage our best educators to remain teaching in this Appalachian region. A stipulation of the awards is that $10,000 of the prize is to be spent for international travel to broaden the perspective of the educator, further enhancing their ability to bring the world into the classroom.

The McGlothlin Awards for Teaching Excellence have made a positive impact on our community.  Now in our seventh year, the goal is to bring heightened awareness of the awards through this culminating event. An anticipated 500 participants will attend the McGlothlin Celebration of Teaching at Radford University.  We believe the workshops and events will inspire more talented teachers to enter and remain in the profession to improve rural education.

Special thanks to Radford University's College of Education and Human Development and Blue Ridge Public Television
