Our first stop was Galway, Ireland.

The sites we visited in and around Galway are listed in pink at left.

Click on them for more information and pictures.

Our second day was full of literary sightseeing.  Right in Galway is The Nora Barnacle House.  Nora was James Joyce's wife and she was originally from Galway.  She left Galway to live in Dublin, where she and James actually met.  Nora's house is now kept as a historical site and it is full of James & Nora memorabilia.

Love letter from James Joyce to Nora

Above is a picture of a love letter from James Joyce to Nora from the year 1909.  This actual letter is on display at the house.

This section reads:

"My dear little runaway Nora, I am writing this to you sitting at the kitchen table in your mother's house!!!  Have been here all day talking with her and I see that she is my darling's mother and I like her very much.  She sang for me The Lass..."

His letter was very romantic and it was just so amazing to actually see this letter!  There were many such items on display at the house.

The house itself is very small.  The main room has a large fireplace that would have been used for cooking and eating.  A very small set of stairs takes you up to a sleeping area.  The guide we had for our "tour" was very knowledgeable of James and Nora Joyce and provided us with a great glimpse into their lives.
