Notes on the Bradshaw Video
This web handout is a study guide for you to use to understand the Bradshaw
video on the family system. It includes a series of phrases that Bradshaw
uses during his discussion of how family systems work. You must know what these
phrases mean to do well on the test.
- We become numbed out--we don't smell what we smell--we don't feel
what we feel-- we don't hear what we hear.
- Finding your bliss equals personal power.
- Developmental dependency needs
- We differ from other animals because we weep, laugh, and feel the
emotion of shame.
- All misbehaved children are dis-couraged.
- We need to give ourselves permission to play.
- We need to embrace the child within.
- You act out the scenes of abuse--the wounded self picks the
person.
- We need a mirroring face where every part of us is mirrored back.
- Blame is a cover up for shame.
- What happens when we are raised by an adult child?
- Being raised by an adult child causes parts of us to become split
off and projected on to other people or internalized resulting in
a lack of self acceptance.
- People raised in dysfunctional families are probably shamed the
most when they are the neediest.
- You can only heal what you feel.
- Either work it out or act it out.
