Chapter 11

Define race. Why do people not all look alike? Are there any biologically pure races? Why do people make such much of race? What is ethnicity? What is a minority and what two characteristics do they have in common? Are women a minority or a majority group? Define prejudice and stereotypes. Is the stereotype about poor people accurate? Define racism and know the difference between individual and institutional forms of racism. Know the different theories of prejudice. If people are prejudiced against one minority are they likely to be prejudiced against all minorities? According to conflict theorists, what is the function or racism? What is Shelby Steele's argument? What is discrimination and do prejudiced people always act in a discriminatory manner? Give an example of institutional discrimination.
