Glendalough

Glendalough is a 6th century settlement established by St. Kevin. It was sacked by the Vikings over and over but managed to thrive for over six hundred years. Most of the buildings were built between the 8th and the 12th century though exact dates are not known.  It was very relaxing to walk around Glendalough after our travels in Galway and Sligo. There are two lakes that you are able to walk around and several hiking trails. Lindsey and I pretty much climbed the side of the mountain looking for a waterfall we had read about in our guide book. Well after blazing our own trail we decided that we were obviously not going the right way and turned around. The waterfall ended up being right off the main trail and not difficult to get to at all. It was pretty and worth the trouble to find.

Round Tower at Glendalough

The Round Tower  sits in the corner of the graveyard and is 110 feet tall. The cap of the tower was rebuilt in the 1870s using stones that were found inside.
