Adjusting to family life: Role of infant temperament and parenting style in the sleep behavior of children adopted from China.

Researchers:     Dr. Jayne E Bucy and Dr. Dianne Friedman

You are invited to participate in this study investigating how young Chinese children adjust to international adoption. Any parent of a Chinese born child between 12 and 36 months of age who was adopted internationally at least 2 months ago is invited to participate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of infant temperament and parenting style on children’s’ adjustment to their new families as indicated by their sleep behavior.

Participation in this study involves completion of questionnaires presented on-line. By accessing an internet link, you will be taken to a survey that asks you provide general demographic information about you and your family, and to answer questions about your child’s adoption and current child care arrangements. In addition, you will be asked to complete the Toddler Temperament Scale, Parental Interactive Bedtime Behavior Scale, selected questions from the Child’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire, Parental Stress Scale, and Maternal Cognitions about Infant Sleep Questionnaire. It will take about 30 minutes to complete this study and you may leave the study and then return to complete it at another time, if you so desire.

There are no direct benefits associated with participation in the study. By participating, you will contribute to a better understanding of some of the challenges faced by Chinese adopted children and their families as they adjust to their new life.

Your will not be asked to provide your name, so your individual responses will not be identified, though there may be a minimal risk that you could be identified indirectly though the descriptive information you provide. Your answers to the questions will be kept confidentially on a secured server. The results of this study will be presented in group form and no individuals will be identified. Your participation is voluntary and you may decide to stop participation or refuse to answer any question at any time.
